Strange Fruit: New Paintings by Hung Liu

Hung Liu’s paintings are loosely based on photographs of historic China, many taken by early 20th century Western visitors. Liu was born in China in 1948 and underwent the rigorous re-education of Mao´s Cultural Revolution, eventually studying to be a mural painter. Later she received an MFA at the University of San Diego. Now Liu reinterprets these historic images, some of daily life and others of restrictive Chinese social traditions. She reinterprets and enhances these subjects in expressive, multi-layered paintings. She has been the recipient of an artists fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts and an International Art Critic´s Award.
