Hung Liu: New Paintings
Hung Liu’s paintings are loosely based on photographs of historic China, most taken by early 20th century Western visitors. Liu was born in China in 1948 and underwent the rigorous re-education of the Maoist regime, eventually studying to be a mural painter. Later she received an MFA at the University of San Diego. Now Liu reinterprets these historic images, some of daily life and others of restrictive Chinese social traditions. She reinterprets and enhances these subjects in expressive,multi-layered paintings.
