Collecting contemporary ceramics has an illustrious five-decades-long history at the ASU Art Museum, and we are excited to be celebrating the Ceramics Research Center’s 10th anniversary in its current facility. Our reputation and commitment to this medium is unparalleled in the United States.

In honor of this milestone, we asked ceramic collectors and artists nationwide to consider donating a work to fill gaps in the collection: artists who are not currently represented (both utilitarian and sculptural) or international artists from Asia and Europe.

The response was very enthusiastic, as this exhibition demonstrates. Included are two masterworks from Tatsuo Shimaoka, a national living treasure from Japan; an iconic hare charger by Ken Ferguson, who was an influential artist and educator at the Kansas City Art Institute; a dramatic vase with explosive surfaces by British artist Gareth Mason; and a striking, eloquent figure by Santa Clara Pueblo artist Rose B. Simpson, among others.

On behalf of the museum staff, we would like to express our gratitude to the following collectors and artists who have made these generous gifts possible: Hope and Mel Barkan (Massachusetts); Elaine and Sidney Cohen (Arizona); Joyce Cooper (Arizona); Paul and Sharon Dauer (California); Skippy and Manny Gerard (New York); Marc and Diane Grainer (Maryland); Carlos Enrique Prado Herrera (Cuba); Jason Jacques Gallery (New York); Stéphane Janssen (Arizona); Darien Johnson (New York); Sara and David Lieberman (Arizona); Pucker Gallery (Massachusetts); Mindy Solomon Gallery (Florida); Bill Stewart (New York) and Rob and Jossline Wood (Virginia).
