Know Mingei? If not, don’t worry—it’s a fascinating part of Japanese art and culture that many people aren’t familiar with. Mingei (民芸) means “folk art” in Japanese. It was a movement that started in the 1920s when a philosopher named Yanagi Sōetsu noticed that everyday handcrafted objects—like pottery, textiles, baskets, and woodwork—had a unique beauty even though they weren’t made by famous artists. Instead of focusing on expensive, one-of-a-kind pieces, Mingei celebrates the humble, functional, and handmade objects used by ordinary people. Join Craft Collections and Program Specialist Amanda Hiatt and Curatorial Fellow Sade Moore for a classroom-style lecture covering the fundamentals of Mingei art!
