SUMMARY:Waltzing on the ASU Tempe Campus: John Cage's "49 Waltzes for the Five Boroughs of      New York"
DESCRIPTION:The ASU Art Museum presents an audio-visual installation of a version of Cage’s “49 Waltzes” for the ASU Tempe campus\, realized by 23 students from the School of Music and the School of Arts\, Media + Engineering for the museum.\nIn 1977 the American composer John Cage created “49 Waltzes for the Five Boroughs of New York.” The work’s score is a map of New York City and features 49 superimposed triangles. Each triangle symbolizes a waltz. Cage obtained each point of the triangles via chance operations to pin down a specific location. Performers of “49 Waltzes” visit each identified location to capture its sounds and sights to experience\, treasure and document the acoustic ecology of a place.\nCage encouraged transcriptions of this work for other places. Thus students of ASU’s School of Music and School of Arts\, Media + Engineering teamed up to transcribe this work for their Tempe campus.

SUMMARY:Undoing Time: Art and Histories of Incarceration
DESCRIPTION:“Undoing Time: Art and Histories of Incarceration” considers the foundational roots of confinement from philosophical\, sociological\, theological and art historical perspectives to better understand the fact that today’s mass incarceration crisis is centuries in the making. “Undoing Time” traces history’s images that contribute to the entrenched cultural beliefs associated with today’s carceral system. The exhibition commissions new works of contemporary art based on the analysis of art historical images of incarceration. The 12 contemporary artists in the exhibition invest in community collaboration\, work in an expansive range of media and rethink traditional archival research to consider how artistic expression reveals the underlying logics of criminality and correction. For the first time in ASU Art Museum’s history\, “Undoing Time” will engage all galleries\, dedicating the entire museum to this one large-scale exhibition and public programming. \n“Undoing Time” is organized by Miki Garcia\, Heather Sealy Lineberry\, Matthew Villar Miranda and Julio César Morales\, and features artists Carolina Aranibar-Fernández\, Juan Brenner\, Raven Chacon\, Sandra de la Loza\, Ashley Hunt\, Cannupa Hanska Luger\, Michael Rohd\, Paul Rucker\, Xaviera Simmons\, Stephanie Syjuco\, Vincent Valdez and Mario Ybarra Jr. \n“Undoing Time: Art and Histories of Incarceration” is generously supported by the Art for Justice Fund\, a sponsored project of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors. SUMMARY:Art in Focus: Journeys Toward Healing
DESCRIPTION:At the ASU Art Museum\, we recognize that art has the power to inspire our minds and bodies\, cultivate a shared sense of community\, aid in healing and foster social change. “Art in Focus: Journeys Toward Healing” provides an interlude — mental and physical — for contemplating ideas of wholeness and wellbeing. The artworks in this gallery respond to the exhibition on view\, Undoing Time: Art and Histories of Incarceration\, by presenting images that can change how we view and imagine incarceration. Instead of focusing on images of oppression\, black and white stripes or barbed wires\, the curators center images of nature\, renewal\, connection and recovery. This exhibition suggests that art can serve as a source of healing and point to more restorative solutions to critical community issues. \nThe exhibition is organized by Mary-Beth Buesgen\, Curator of the Ceramics Research Center Collection and Archives; Sarah Kelly\, Windgate Curator of Contemporary Craft and Design; Julio César Morales\, Senior Curator; Brittany Corrales\, Curator; Matthew Villar Miranda\, LACMA-ASU Curatorial Fellow; and Diem Lanakai\, Windgate Curatorial Assistant. “Journeys Toward Healing” highlights works on paper\, ceramics\, baskets and wood objects from the museum’s collection. \nImage credit: John Dowell\, “Healing\,” 1999\, 17 x 20″\, color lithograph on paper. This process allowed them to participate in the exhibition-making process\, rather than just sharing the final product with our visitors. From a collection of over 13\,000 objects\, the students narrowed their focus to highlight a few works that have entered the museum’s collection in the last five years. Many of the works selected are representative of our collection strengths\, as well as our goal of creating an archive of our exhibition history. We are thrilled to include recent acquisitions by artists including José Clemente Orozco\, Michael Sherrill\, June Wayne\, Kumi Tsuda\, Julie Heffernan\, Courtney Leonard\, Cannupa Hanska Luger\, Henry Pim\, Susan Collett\, Justin Rothshank\, Isaac Scott and Marina Perez Simão.
