SUMMARY:Waltzing on the ASU Tempe Campus: John Cage's "49 Waltzes for the Five Boroughs of      New York"
DESCRIPTION:The ASU Art Museum presents an audio-visual installation of a version of Cage’s “49 Waltzes” for the ASU Tempe campus\, realized by 23 students from the School of Music and the School of Arts\, Media + Engineering for the museum.\nIn 1977 the American composer John Cage created “49 Waltzes for the Five Boroughs of New York.” The work’s score is a map of New York City and features 49 superimposed triangles. Each triangle symbolizes a waltz. Cage obtained each point of the triangles via chance operations to pin down a specific location. Performers of “49 Waltzes” visit each identified location to capture its sounds and sights to experience\, treasure and document the acoustic ecology of a place.\nCage encouraged transcriptions of this work for other places. Thus students of ASU’s School of Music and School of Arts\, Media + Engineering teamed up to transcribe this work for their Tempe campus.

SUMMARY:Change Agent: June Wayne and the Tamarind Workshop
DESCRIPTION:“Change Agent” highlights June Wayne’s legacy as an artist\, printmaker\, educator and activist. Wayne refused to follow a signature style\, taking on a variety of themes such as personal history\, modern science and social issues. In the Dorothy Series\, she narrates the life of her mother\, a Russian Jewish immigrant and traveling saleswoman for a garter company. In the Stellar Winds and Solar Flares Series\, she mines natural phenomena as metaphors for the human condition. \nWayne was a catalyst for the revival of fine art lithography in the United States\, a medium which had all but vanished by the 1950s. She championed lithography as an art form as vital as painting after studying the technique in Paris with the printer Marcel Durassier. With a grant from the Ford Foundation\, Wayne founded the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in Los Angeles in 1960. The experimental workshop created a pool of printers and apprentices\, as artists from across the country were invited to master the process of lithography. Now known as the Tamarind Institute of the University of New Mexico\, it continues Wayne’s visionary plan as a major training center for fine art printers. \nAlong with prints by Wayne\, “Change Agent” also features lithographs by internationally-known artists who trained at Tamarind such as Ed Ruscha\, Matsumi Kanemitsu and Fritz Scholder. All of the works in the exhibition are drawn from the ASU Art Museum’s Jules Heller Print Study Room\, which houses a collection of 6\,000 prints from throughout history and around the world. \n“Change Agent: June Wayne and the Tamarind Workshop” is supported by the Evelyn Smith Exhibition Fund. SUMMARY:Juntos Together: Iván Argote
DESCRIPTION:In his first solo museum exhibition in the U.S.\, “Juntos Together” presents films\, videos\, sculpture and site-specific installations by Columbian-born\, Paris-based artist Iván Argote. The exhibition includes Argote’s first film and video survey (2007–2019)\, featuring experimental films that range from the documentation of public interventions to subtler gestures that push the boundaries of the moving image. Along with his video survey is a site-specific\, sculptural installation that considers the current cultural climate of Arizona. Argote’s sculptures blend references to pre-Colombian art and brutalist architecture\, and often contain texts that embody what the artist calls “Ternura Radical (Radical Tenderness).” This strategy uses affection\, emotions and humor as subversive tools to engage public audiences on political and personal levels. \n“Juntos Together” is curated by Julio César Morales and is supported by the Helme Prinzen Endowment\, ASU Art Museum Artist Residency\, Perrotin Gallery and Patti Parsons. SUMMARY:Pulso: Tania Candiani (Part I)
DESCRIPTION:“Pulso” (2016) by Tania Candiani is a dynamic sound-based project depicting a one-day performance by 195 women in Mexico City’s underground metro stations. The title translates to “pulse” in English\, and began with the artist asking\, “what is the pulse of Mexico City today and is it possible to recover the ancient pulse of an old Aztec city?” Mexico City is one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world\, where four of the 21 million inhabitants use the metro system daily. Candiani also explored the underground rivers of the city while considering the political and historical implications of water security. The resulting project activates and reclaims the public space using female bodies\, while examining gender relationships in the context of social roles and notions of power. Incorporating pre-Hispanic drums\, historically only played by men\, the artist addresses the changing roles and perceptions of women. DESCRIPTION:“Begin at the End” features 13 contemporary artists who experiment with the written word. Through a broad range of media\, the artists explore typography as image\, text as a system of signs and symbols\, and language as a tool of political resistance. SUMMARY:Wonderland: Patti Warashina and Michael Lucero
DESCRIPTION:Drawn from ASU Art Museum’s permanent collection\, “Wonderland” presents the work of internationally-known artists Patti Warashina and Michael Lucero. The artists’ long friendship began when Lucero was a student of Warashina’s in the mid 1970s. Their ceramic sculptures share an emphasis on the figure and issues of the human condition. Mixed cultural and historic references in the work reflect the artists’ own hybrid identities and experiences. Throughout their work\, they use satire\, humor and the fanciful as ways to explore their daily realities and new imaginaries. \n“Wonderland” is supported by the Windgate Charitable Foundation\, Armstrong-Prior\, Inc. and friends of the Ceramics Research Center.
