SUMMARY:Waltzing on the ASU Tempe Campus: John Cage's "49 Waltzes for the Five Boroughs of      New York"
DESCRIPTION:The ASU Art Museum presents an audio-visual installation of a version of Cage’s “49 Waltzes” for the ASU Tempe campus\, realized by 23 students from the School of Music and the School of Arts\, Media + Engineering for the museum.\nIn 1977 the American composer John Cage created “49 Waltzes for the Five Boroughs of New York.” The work’s score is a map of New York City and features 49 superimposed triangles. Each triangle symbolizes a waltz. Cage obtained each point of the triangles via chance operations to pin down a specific location. Performers of “49 Waltzes” visit each identified location to capture its sounds and sights to experience\, treasure and document the acoustic ecology of a place.\nCage encouraged transcriptions of this work for other places. Thus students of ASU’s School of Music and School of Arts\, Media + Engineering teamed up to transcribe this work for their Tempe campus.

SUMMARY:The Good Making of Good Things: Craft Horizons Magazine 1941–1979
DESCRIPTION:During its nearly 40 years in print\, Craft Horizons documented the craft movement as it happened. This exhibition pairs works from ASU Art Museum’s collection that were made by artists featured in the magazine with articles\, reviews and letters from readers to illustrate the essential role Craft Horizons played in the development of craft in the United States from 1941–1979. \nThis exhibition is curated by the 2017 Center for Craft Curatorial Fellows Elizabeth Essner\, Lily Kane and Meaghan Roddy and was originally organized by the Center for Craft. SUMMARY:Beyond Beyond
DESCRIPTION:“Beyond Beyond” is a solo exhibition of Ai Kijima\, a contemporary artist whose riotous collages of figures\, patterns and colors are made from meticulously pieced and fused textiles. \nIn her work from the early 2000s\, she used scraps of bed sheets\, curtains\, clothing and dish towels collected from thrift stores to create artworks that depict a variety of characters ranging from American cartoons to Japanese anime. DESCRIPTION:“Indwelling” is a solo exhibition of Yuri Kobayashi\, a contemporary artist who combines traditional woodworking practices and refined Japanese aesthetics to create sculptures that reflect her identity\, experiences and thoughts. \nIn the five artworks in “Indwelling\,” Kobayashi strives to embody the surprise and wonder found in the impalpable and often illogical world in which we live. \nWith multiple wooden components\, handcrafted with close attention to detail\, each work represents an attempt to decipher and represent\, in abstract form\, this perpetual desire to represent the ineffable. \nThe most recent installation was created while Kobayashi participated in ASU Art Museum’s Artist Residency. \nThis exhibit is supported by the Windgate Charitable Foundation as part of the Windgate Contemporary Craft Initiative at ASU Art Museum.
