SUMMARY:Waltzing on the ASU Tempe Campus: John Cage's "49 Waltzes for the Five Boroughs of      New York"
DESCRIPTION:The ASU Art Museum presents an audio-visual installation of a version of Cage’s “49 Waltzes” for the ASU Tempe campus\, realized by 23 students from the School of Music and the School of Arts\, Media + Engineering for the museum.\nIn 1977 the American composer John Cage created “49 Waltzes for the Five Boroughs of New York.” The work’s score is a map of New York City and features 49 superimposed triangles. Each triangle symbolizes a waltz. Cage obtained each point of the triangles via chance operations to pin down a specific location. Performers of “49 Waltzes” visit each identified location to capture its sounds and sights to experience\, treasure and document the acoustic ecology of a place.\nCage encouraged transcriptions of this work for other places. Thus students of ASU’s School of Music and School of Arts\, Media + Engineering teamed up to transcribe this work for their Tempe campus.

SUMMARY:SABER ACOMODAR
DESCRIPTION:In the last several years\, contemporary artists from Guadalajara have been gaining global attention from the city’s new arts and crafts movement. ” SABER ACOMODAR” is a landmark exhibition that\, for the first time\, tells the story of art from the state of Jalisco in Mexico. \nFocusing on the last hundred years of production\, the exhibition showcases collaborations between artists and artisans (potters\, carpenters\, blacksmiths\, jewelers\, sign painters and printmakers) who work and live in western Mexico. The result of these intersections is the integration of contemporary ideas\, precolonial techniques and methods introduced by the Spanish. \nRecently\, artists have employed traditional materials and practices to produce complex conceptual objects and installations. \nComprised of work by 25 artists\, the majority of whom are from Guadalajara\, the exhibition explores the integration of contemporary ideas with traditional techniques. \nThis exhibition is guest curated by Patrick Charpenel\, the recently-appointed executive director of El Museo del Barrio in New York. SUMMARY:The Good Making of Good Things: Craft Horizons Magazine 1941–1979
DESCRIPTION:During its nearly 40 years in print\, Craft Horizons documented the craft movement as it happened. This exhibition pairs works from ASU Art Museum’s collection that were made by artists featured in the magazine with articles\, reviews and letters from readers to illustrate the essential role Craft Horizons played in the development of craft in the United States from 1941–1979. \nThis exhibition is curated by the 2017 Center for Craft Curatorial Fellows Elizabeth Essner\, Lily Kane and Meaghan Roddy and was originally organized by the Center for Craft.
