SUMMARY:Waltzing on the ASU Tempe Campus: John Cage's "49 Waltzes for the Five Boroughs of      New York"
DESCRIPTION:The ASU Art Museum presents an audio-visual installation of a version of Cage’s “49 Waltzes” for the ASU Tempe campus\, realized by 23 students from the School of Music and the School of Arts\, Media + Engineering for the museum.\nIn 1977 the American composer John Cage created “49 Waltzes for the Five Boroughs of New York.” The work’s score is a map of New York City and features 49 superimposed triangles. Each triangle symbolizes a waltz. Cage obtained each point of the triangles via chance operations to pin down a specific location. Performers of “49 Waltzes” visit each identified location to capture its sounds and sights to experience\, treasure and document the acoustic ecology of a place.\nCage encouraged transcriptions of this work for other places. Thus students of ASU’s School of Music and School of Arts\, Media + Engineering teamed up to transcribe this work for their Tempe campus.

DESCRIPTION:Gabriel Rico is the first artist-in-residence for the new GDL>PHX Residencias Artísticas program (organized by CALA Alliance\, ASU Art Museum and Programa Anual de Open Studios)\, where artists from both cities are chosen to develop new work in Guadalajara\, Mexico and Phoenix\, Arizona. SUMMARY:Pipe Brothers: Tom and James Franco
DESCRIPTION:For the past year\, Bay Area artist Tom Franco has been collaborating with his brother\, actor James Franco\, on a series of enormous ceramic sculptures at Mission Clay Products\, a Phoenix-based factory that produces vitrified clay pipes used mainly for sewage. Through their Arts and Industry program\, Mission Clay has provided materials and working space in their factory to artists for almost four decades. “Pipe Brothers” showcases the Franco brothers’ wide-ranging creative output while celebrating Mission Clay’s role as a catalyst within the arts community. SUMMARY:Porøs
DESCRIPTION:Nova Scotia-based artist Neil Forrest investigates ceramics\, architectonics and the relationship between micro and macro structures in “Porøs” (Norwegian for “porous”). Made up of a series of ceramic cisterns and vessels\, this grotto-like installation contains proliferating crystals\, percolating rock and moving liquids. \nThis project is part of the Windgate Contemporary Craft Initiative at ASU Art Museum and is supported by the Windgate Charitable Foundation.
