SUMMARY:Waltzing on the ASU Tempe Campus: John Cage's "49 Waltzes for the Five Boroughs of      New York"
DESCRIPTION:The ASU Art Museum presents an audio-visual installation of a version of Cage’s “49 Waltzes” for the ASU Tempe campus\, realized by 23 students from the School of Music and the School of Arts\, Media + Engineering for the museum.\nIn 1977 the American composer John Cage created “49 Waltzes for the Five Boroughs of New York.” The work’s score is a map of New York City and features 49 superimposed triangles. Each triangle symbolizes a waltz. Cage obtained each point of the triangles via chance operations to pin down a specific location. Performers of “49 Waltzes” visit each identified location to capture its sounds and sights to experience\, treasure and document the acoustic ecology of a place.\nCage encouraged transcriptions of this work for other places. Thus students of ASU’s School of Music and School of Arts\, Media + Engineering teamed up to transcribe this work for their Tempe campus.

DESCRIPTION:Come experience a few of the great acquisitions the museum received in 2015. “Blow Up\,” an interactive piece by Scott Snibbe\, incorporates breath\, fans\, technology and sound. There are also more traditional works – paintings – but with very non-traditional content. DESCRIPTION:“Breach: Log 16” showcases the work of Courtney Michele Leonard\, an artist and filmmaker from the Shinnecock Nation of Long Island\, New York. Leonard’s work explores the evolution of language\, image and culture through mixed media pieces of video\, audio and tangible objects. \nThis exhibition is an exploration of historical ties to water and whale; imposed law; and a current relationship of material sustainability. Navigation lies within visual translation\, acceptance and pursuit of process. Charting exists as a log of record\, documenting and mapping each point where the surface breaks. \n“Breach: Log 16” catalogs the expedition\, encounters and experiences. \nThe opening reception will be held following the Jan Fisher Memorial Lecture by Courtney M.
