DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Rashad Shabazz\, Associate Professor in the Schools of Social Transformation and Geographical Sciences & Urban Planning\, and Jeanelle Austin\, Executive Director of the George Floyd Global Memorial for a discussion around the history and politics of Minneapolis and Prince and how they weave together to create meaning in the present day. \nThis event is held by the Center for Work and Democracy. \n“Biography of a Sound” is about the music Prince made famous—the Minneapolis Sound. This book is a musical geography that tells the story of how Indian removal\, white settlement\, mass migration\, industrialization\, music education\, racism\, and a genius kid born and raised in the city’s small Black community gave rise to a form of transgressive popular music that put the “vanilla city” of Minneapolis on the map. For over four decades\, Prince dazzled us with his unique combination of rock\, funk\, R&B\, jazz\, and new wave. His musical range was unparalleled; his talent was otherworldly\, and his drive was legendary. He was a one-man band who wrote\, arranged\, composed\, and performed most of the music on his 44 studio albums\, influenced generations of musicians\, and mentored musicians like Janelle Monae\, Lizzo\, and Alicia Keys. He single-handedly changed the face of popular music and became one of the greatest and most prolific artists we’ve ever seen. DESCRIPTION:“Chicano/a/x Prints and Graphics: Selections from the Hispanic Research Center’s Collection\, 1980–2010” showcases a partnership between ASU’s Hispanic Research Center (HRC) and ASU Art Museum and brings together works from the 1980s into the 2010s drawn from the HRC’s dynamic collection. Featuring over 30 artists who each offer a kaleidoscope of perspectives on the Mexican American experience\, this year-long exhibition pays homage to the ideals of the Chicano Movement of the 1960s and 70s and expands upon them through the widely disseminated medium of prints. Presented in two parts\, this unique exhibition underscores how Chicano/a/x artists have employed prints and graphics to build community\, engage with social concerns\, and interrogate shifting notions of political and cultural identity over time. \n“Chicano/a/x Prints and Graphics: Selections from the Hispanic Research Center’s Collection\, 1980–2010” is organized by ASUAM Senior Curator Alana Hernandez and ASUAM Curator Brittany Corrales and is made possible by funding provided by the Evelyn Smith Exhibition Fund. How might we tackle taboo topics such as postpartum anxiety\, rage\, and birth trauma\, while celebrating maternal joy\, love\, sacredness and the spectrum of emotions in between? What can we do to acknowledge the invisible labor of mothering\, recognizing it is not a monolithic experience\, and offering a rich tapestry of alternative\, inclusive narratives? \n“Notes on Motherhood” explores various stages of matrescence\, or “mother-becoming” –– from birth and caregiving to grief and loss. The exhibition challenges the narrow depictions of mothers and mothering within art history and visual culture. Drawing from the museum’s dynamic collection\, the presentation assesses the presence and absence of nuanced\, complex portrayals of motherhood. Often\, maternity is viewed through a male gaze\, with the image of the Madonna and Child dominating the experience. Alongside selections from the collection\, the exhibition inserts voices and perspectives traditionally left out. Regional women-identified artists\, such as Megan Driving Hawk (United States\, b. 1988)\, Gabriela Muñoz (United States\, b. SUMMARY:Spinnte-Spanne by Kristin Bauer\, A Notes on Motherhood Closing Event
DESCRIPTION:“Spinnte-Spänne” is a site-specific interdisciplinary performance by artist Kristin Bauer that synthesizes gestural movement\, constructed sound and an exploration of the eternal feminine. \nEach iteration of “Spinne” draws inspiration from the site\, cosmological time and the artist’s personal connection to the location\, while also considering the broader context of the moment. “Spinnte-Spänne\,” the latest iteration\, takes its title from the etymology of the word “spider\,” derived from the Proto-Germanic root spinnan\, meaning “to spin.” Combining the present and past tense of the verb\, the title translates loosely as “spin\, spun.” It suggests an action occurring in the present while existing beyond fixed time\, followed by a reflection on completion. \nThis performance explores the shadow symbolism of the spider\, encompassing themes of creation and destruction. Weaving and web-spinning serve as metaphors for depth meditation. Mirroring the erratic patterns of a black widow’s web\, Bauer uses caution tape to create an intricate design within the delineated center of the space\, set against a shadowy\, chromatic light-scape. Silent\, repetitive movements reflect the tension between opposites\, embodying an exploration of the roles of captor and captive. \nAn atmospheric sound piece created by Bauer accompanies the performance. It adapts chords from Danzig’s “Mother” and layers them with field recordings from the ASU Art Museum grounds and the artist’s studio neighborhood in San Francisco. \n“Spinnte-Spänne” is a meditation on themes of being\, becoming and experiencing motherhood. Developed for the closing reception of “Notes on Motherhood\,” the piece symbolically engages with the ASU Art Museum’s architecture\, which embodies dualities of interior and exterior\, passage and destination\, and descent and ascent.
