India)\, Wanesia Misquadace (Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa\, b. 1971)\, and Agnese Udinotti (United States\, b. Greece 1940). This multigenerational grouping of artists lends itself to a rich conversation about training\, history\, and material concerns. Through diverse alloy-based practices\, the exhibition explores connections between the body\, nature\, labor and regional culture\, revealing metalwork as both an artistic and cultural form of transformation. \n“Wrought by Fire: Metalwork of the Southwest” is organized by Windgate Curatorial Fellow Sade Moore and made possible by generous funding from Windgate Charitable Foundation. This research was supported by a Craft Research Fund Grant from the Center for Craft. The exhibition is presented in collaboration with a Community of Practice composed of Sandra McClain\, metal shop Manager at Phoenix Forge\, Leticia Bejarano\, Local Jeweler and Co-Owner of Weld-Her and Shanen L. Aranmór\, MS\, CWI/CWE\, Chief Wellness Welder for Weld Like A Girl. \n____ \n“Cross Check: William Wegman and Jacob Trouba\,” brings together the distinct practices of artist William Wegman and professional hockey player turned artist Jacob Trouba. “Cross Check: William Wegman and Jacob Trouba” explores movement as a form of artistic production\, translation\, and collaboration. Rooted in the shared language of hockey\, the exhibition examines the body as both subject and medium through a series of collaborative works presented publicly for the first time. Drawing on his experience as an athlete\, Trouba covers himself in ink while wearing hockey gear and propels himself across the canvas\, leaving behind marks that record speed\, force\, and impact. Wegman responds by translating those gestures into paintings that reinterpret the movement at an intimate scale\, creating an ongoing dialogue between action and reflection. Borrowing its title from the hockey maneuver in which a player forcefully checks an opponent with both hands on the stick\, Cross Check reveals how physicality\, play\, and creative exchange transform movement\, whether on the ice or in the studio\, into a powerful form of artistic expression. \n“Cross Check: Jacob Trouba and William Wegman is organized by ASU Art Museum Senior Curator Alana Hernandez and ASU Art Museum Windgate Curatorial Fellow Sade Moore. The exhibition is made possible by generous funding provided by NHL Unites.

SUMMARY:To Sink the Shallow and Raise the Deep
DESCRIPTION:“To Sink the Shallow and Raise the Deep” presents a focused consideration of Leslie Martinez’s practice over the past several years. The exhibition is timed with their selection as the 2026 keynote speaker for the Visionary Lecture Series. Bringing together early large-scale works with recent experiments in size and scale\, the presentation traces Martinez’s evolving approach to painting as a process of accumulation\, transformation and return. \nMartinez’s material language is shaped by what is available\, what remains and what can be carried forward. Studio rags\, jersey\, terry cloth\, acrylic wastewater\, pigment sediment and other remnants are cut\, sewn\, stained\, embedded and reworked\, sometimes over many years. Through this ongoing processing\, the mundane is granted weight and memory. Materials hold traces of Martinez’s time in Connecticut while at Yale\, as well as New York\, Arizona\, Texas and the spaces between. Driving across Southwestern landscapes becomes a form of looking and knowing\, a prolonged encounter with shifting terrain\, architecture\, economy\, surveillance and belonging. \nMartinez’s practice is grounded in rasquachismo\, a term coined by scholar Tomás Ybarra-Fausto to describe a Chicanx “underdog perspective rooted in resourcefulness and adaptability yet mindful of stance and style.” Martinez’s no-waste ethic enables them to wield a vernacular of painting that engages the formal legacies of abstraction while honoring generational practices of survival and sustenance learned from their family. In these works\, materials are active carriers of use\, memory and place. They settle\, separate\, stain and absorb\, holding the shallow and the deep in restless relation. \n\n“To Sink the Shallow and Raise the Deep” is organized by ASU Art Museum Senior Curator Alana Hernandez with ASU Art Museum Latinx Curatorial Fellow Natalie Solis.

The exhibition highlights longstanding strengths in craft\, prints\, Latinx and Latin American art and socially engaged practices\, while examining how shifting cultural contexts\, artistic approaches and institutional priorities have guided collecting decisions over time.
