DESCRIPTION:Language of the Four Directions\n“Language of the Four Directions” is a multi-site ekphrasis poetry workshop series rooted in Diné philosophy\, exploring how place\, community and direction influence creative expression. Through this series\, we will activate the same artwork across five different locations\, engaging with it through writing\, storytelling and shared reflection to understand how each “area’s language” uniquely responds to the piece. Each workshop will center on a single shared image or artwork\, used as an anchor across time and space. DESCRIPTION:Join artist-in-residence Jennif(f)er Tamayo for a live sonic performance presented as part of “Tierras Reimaginadas: Migration.” \nIn “mygrunt is a total world\, a prelude\,” Tamayo weaves together field recordings\, voice\, protest sounds\, memory fragments and electronic beats into an immersive soundscape exploring migration\, liberation and queer decolonial listening practices. \nDrawing from interviews with migrant community members\, family and collaborators\, the performance layers breath\, wind\, laughter\, sirens\, bass and celebration. Through repetition and distortion\, these sounds shift and expand\, activating the artworks in the exhibition and creating dialogue between personal memory and collective resistance. \nPart sound collage and part embodied archive\, this live mixing performance invites audiences to experience migration not only as movement across borders but as a shifting sonic landscape shaped by survival and possibility. \nRSVP >>>

DESCRIPTION:“Carmen Lomas Garza: Picturing the Familiar” is the first major exhibition devoted to artist\, activist and educator Carmen Lomas Garza (b. 1948) since 2001. Bringing fresh insight to her expansive career\, the exhibition follows Garza’s work across media. It also situates her practice within a broader cultural landscape\, featuring works by contemporaries who collaborated with or influenced her at pivotal moments.Organized chronologically and shaped by thematic groupings\, the exhibition traces Garza’s artistic evolution from the 1960s through the mid-2000s.  \n\n\n“Carmen Lomas Garza: Picturing the Familiar” is organized by ASU Art Museum Senior Curator Alana Hernandez\, with ASU Art Museum Latinx Curatorial Fellow Natalie Solis. Major support is provided by Terra Foundation for American Art and Teiger Foundation. Generous funding is provided by the Institute for Museum and Library Services and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Additional support is provided by the Airoldi-Huffman Family Foundation and the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust. Mesa-Bains is best known for her large-scale installations and interpretations of traditional Chicano altars and ofrendas. \nHer work explores Mexican American women’s spiritual practices\, addresses colonial and imperial histories\, the recovery of cultural memory\, and their roles in identity formation. She also uses aesthetic strategies as ways to express experiences historically associated with Mexican American women and as sites for Chicana feminist reclamation. Mesa-Bains was born in Santa Clara\, CA. \nCarmen Guerrero: A Brazilian by birth\, Carmen Guerrero is a descendant of the Tupinambá tribe from the northern state of Pernambuco. She graduated from the Pernambucano Conservatory of Music (Recife\, Brazil) with a degree in Piano Performance. Upon moving to Arizona\, Guerrero formed the popular band Zúm Zúm Zúm along with sculptor husband and native Arizonan Zarco Guerrero. She sings and plays guitar and accordion now as part of the Guerrero Family Musicians.    \nGuerrero is the Arts Education Director at El Rancho del Arte (Mesa) and a teaching artist at area schools.  She co-founded Xicanindio (now Xico\, Inc.) in 1975\, the Arizona Latino Arts Center in 2007\, and the Cultural Coalition\, Inc. in 1996. As executive director of the Cultural Coalition\, she produces annual community festivals such as Mikiztli\, the Día de Los Muertos Phx Festival\, The Mask Alive Festival (Mesa)\, Portal Festival at S’edav Va’aki Museum\, and El Puente Festival at Tempe Center for the Arts. Under her leadership\, Cultural Coalition has grown to partner with numerous local arts organizations and artists. As an artistic producer\, she is committed and dedicated to issues of cultural literacy and social justice.  \nIn 2012\, Guerrero received the Patron of the Arts in Education Award from the Victoria Foundation in 2012. Her board service includes Chair of the i.d.e.a. Museum Foundation\, Mesa Arts Center Foundation\, and the Mesa Association of Hispanic Citizens\, and she is presently Treasurer of the S’edav Va’aki Museum Foundation Board.

As a young girl\, she crossed the US–Mexico border to join her family in Los Angeles\, a harrowing journey chronicled in The Distance Between Us\, a National Book Critics Circle Award finalist. India)\, Wanesia Misquadace (Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa\, b. 1971)\, and Agnese Udinotti (United States\, b. Greece 1940). This multigenerational grouping of artists lends itself to a rich conversation about training\, history\, and material concerns. Through diverse alloy-based practices\, the exhibition explores connections between the body\, nature\, labor and regional culture\, revealing metalwork as both an artistic and cultural form of transformation. \n“Wrought by Fire: Metalwork of the Southwest” is organized by Windgate Curatorial Fellow Sade Moore and made possible by generous funding from Windgate Charitable Foundation. This research was supported by a Craft Research Fund Grant from the Center for Craft. The exhibition is presented in collaboration with a Community of Practice composed of Sandra McClain\, metal shop Manager at Phoenix Forge\, Leticia Bejarano\, Local Jeweler and Co-Owner of Weld-Her and Shanen L. Aranmór\, MS\, CWI/CWE\, Chief Wellness Welder for Weld Like A Girl. \n____ \n“Cross Check: William Wegman and Jacob Trouba\,” brings together the distinct practices of artist William Wegman and professional hockey player turned artist Jacob Trouba. “Cross Check: William Wegman and Jacob Trouba” explores movement as a form of artistic production\, translation\, and collaboration. Rooted in the shared language of hockey\, the exhibition examines the body as both subject and medium through a series of collaborative works presented publicly for the first time. Drawing on his experience as an athlete\, Trouba covers himself in ink while wearing hockey gear and propels himself across the canvas\, leaving behind marks that record speed\, force\, and impact. Wegman responds by translating those gestures into paintings that reinterpret the movement at an intimate scale\, creating an ongoing dialogue between action and reflection. Borrowing its title from the hockey maneuver in which a player forcefully checks an opponent with both hands on the stick\, Cross Check reveals how physicality\, play\, and creative exchange transform movement\, whether on the ice or in the studio\, into a powerful form of artistic expression. \n“Cross Check: Jacob Trouba and William Wegman is organized by ASU Art Museum Senior Curator Alana Hernandez and ASU Art Museum Windgate Curatorial Fellow Sade Moore. The exhibition is made possible by generous funding provided by NHL Unites.
