SUMMARY:Fixer Studio: Felting
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the felting workshop\, led by artist Bilge Aktas\, which will be an introduction to repairing and altering knitted garments and clothing using needle felting and wet felting techniques. Participants are welcome to bring their own pieces\, such as clothing\, to mend or alter. All needed materials including wool\, needles and foam back supports will be provided. \n  \nArtist Bilge Aktas’ Bio: \nBilge is a designer\, researcher\, and educator working with textiles\, material interaction\, and sustainable development. Her interdisciplinary expertise covers a variety of design matters\, approaches\, and tools from industrial design\, material engagement and processes from arts and crafts\, and philosophies and methods from social sciences. \nBilge’s artistic practice focuses on immersive experiences emerging from material interaction and embodied experiences. She works with fibers\, photography\, and video making\, positioning her work at the boundary between art\, design\, and crafts.  \nHer research delves into the intricate dynamics of human-material interaction\, and investigates the complex relationships among humans\, materials\, and the environment. Both in her research and creative work\, she employs methods such as working with sensorial reflections\, learning from the material\, and exploring the roots of design materials.   \nBilge’s creative works with fibers have been exhibited at museums and galleries across Finland\, the US\, and Turkey. Over the last decade\, she has been teaching to university students in the US\, Finland\, Estonia and Turkey. Through workshops\, presentations at international conferences\, and research articles in journals\, she continues to explore how materials shape humans.  \nIn this workshop\, she will facilitate exploring the practice of felting by bringing attention to textile structures and material properties. SUMMARY:Spinnte-Spanne by Kristin Bauer\, A Notes on Motherhood Closing Event
DESCRIPTION:“Spinnte-Spänne” is a site-specific interdisciplinary performance by artist Kristin Bauer that synthesizes gestural movement\, constructed sound and an exploration of the eternal feminine. \nEach iteration of “Spinne” draws inspiration from the site\, cosmological time and the artist’s personal connection to the location\, while also considering the broader context of the moment. “Spinnte-Spänne\,” the latest iteration\, takes its title from the etymology of the word “spider\,” derived from the Proto-Germanic root spinnan\, meaning “to spin.” Combining the present and past tense of the verb\, the title translates loosely as “spin\, spun.” It suggests an action occurring in the present while existing beyond fixed time\, followed by a reflection on completion. \nThis performance explores the shadow symbolism of the spider\, encompassing themes of creation and destruction. Weaving and web-spinning serve as metaphors for depth meditation. Mirroring the erratic patterns of a black widow’s web\, Bauer uses caution tape to create an intricate design within the delineated center of the space\, set against a shadowy\, chromatic light-scape. Silent\, repetitive movements reflect the tension between opposites\, embodying an exploration of the roles of captor and captive. \nAn atmospheric sound piece created by Bauer accompanies the performance. It adapts chords from Danzig’s “Mother” and layers them with field recordings from the ASU Art Museum grounds and the artist’s studio neighborhood in San Francisco. \n“Spinnte-Spänne” is a meditation on themes of being\, becoming and experiencing motherhood. Developed for the closing reception of “Notes on Motherhood\,” the piece symbolically engages with the ASU Art Museum’s architecture\, which embodies dualities of interior and exterior\, passage and destination\, and descent and ascent. SUMMARY:Wrought by Fire: Metalwork of the Southwest
DESCRIPTION:“Wrought by Fire: Metalwork of the Southwest” seeks to challenge the traditionally male-dominated history of metalworking by highlighting the work of four women artists –– Kim Cridler (United States\, b. 1968)\, Siri Devi Khandavilli (United States\, b. India)\, Wanesia Misquadace (Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa\, b. 1971)\, and Agnese Udinotti (United States\, b. Greece 1940). This multigenerational grouping of artists lends itself to a rich conversation about training\, history\, and material concerns. Through diverse alloy-based practices\, the exhibition explores connections between the body\, nature\, labor and regional culture\, revealing metalwork as both an artistic and cultural form of transformation. \n  \n“Wrought by Fire: Metalwork of the Southwest” is organized by Windgate Curatorial Fellow Sade Moore and made possible by generous funding from Windgate Charitable Foundation. This research was supported by a Craft Research Fund Grant from the Center for Craft. The exhibition is presented in collaboration with a Community of Practice composed of Sandra McClain\, metal shop Manager at Phoenix Forge\, Leticia Bejarano\, Local Jeweler and Co-Owner of Weld-Her and Shanen L. Aranmór\, MS\, CWI/CWE\, Chief Wellness Welder for Weld Like A Girl.
