SUMMARY:Visionary Lecture Series: In Conversation with Derek Fordjour
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with internationally renowned artist Derek Fordjour as part of the ASU Art Museum’s second annual Visionary Artist Lecture Series. \nAbout the Artist \nDerek Fordjour was born in Memphis\, Tennessee to Ghanaian parents. He is the recipient of the 2025 Gordon Parks Foundation Artist Fellowship\, the 2023 St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Spirit of the Dream Award\, and previously served as the Alex Katz Chair at Cooper Union. He has received public commissions for the High Line\, the NYC AIDS Memorial\, MOCA Grand Avenue and the MTA’s Arts & Design program. Fordjour’s work has been reviewed in The New York Times\, Financial Times\, The Wall Street Journal\, and The Los Angeles Times. A monograph of his work will be published by Phaidon in 2027. \nHe is a graduate of Morehouse College in Atlanta Georgia\, earned a Master’s Degree in Art Education from Harvard University and an MFA in painting from Hunter College. His work is held in the private and public collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, Whitney Museum of American Art\, Guggenheim Museum\, and The Royal Collection in London among others. DESCRIPTION:Join José Villalobos at the ASU Art Museum for “Rough Ridin’ The American Dream.” This durational performance is mounted on the occasion of his first U.S. solo museum presentation “Rough Rider” that focuses on the spectacle of rodeo culture\, addressing themes related to machismo\, protection and gender. In a time when LGBTQIA+ rights are under attack\, anti-immigrant rhetoric continues to rise\, and systemic racism proceeds to target Latinx and other marginalized communities\, Villalobos uses this performance to challenge dominant narratives of a unified nationalistic identity. “Rough Ridin’ The American Dream” interrogates the very myth of the “American Dream” itself — exposing how it has historically excluded and continues to endanger those who live outside of majoritarian belonging\, particularly at the intersections of queerness\, ethnicity and displacement. \nThis performance includes themes of emotional intensity\, and underscores how queer bodies\, brown bodies\, and immigrant communities are persecuted\, policed and erased in today’s volatile political landscape. SUMMARY:Spinnte-Spanne by Kristin Bauer\, A Notes on Motherhood Closing Event
DESCRIPTION:“Spinnte-Spänne” is a site-specific interdisciplinary performance by artist Kristin Bauer that synthesizes gestural movement\, constructed sound and an exploration of the eternal feminine. \nEach iteration of “Spinne” draws inspiration from the site\, cosmological time and the artist’s personal connection to the location\, while also considering the broader context of the moment. “Spinnte-Spänne\,” the latest iteration\, takes its title from the etymology of the word “spider\,” derived from the Proto-Germanic root spinnan\, meaning “to spin.” Combining the present and past tense of the verb\, the title translates loosely as “spin\, spun.” It suggests an action occurring in the present while existing beyond fixed time\, followed by a reflection on completion. \nThis performance explores the shadow symbolism of the spider\, encompassing themes of creation and destruction. Weaving and web-spinning serve as metaphors for depth meditation. Mirroring the erratic patterns of a black widow’s web\, Bauer uses caution tape to create an intricate design within the delineated center of the space\, set against a shadowy\, chromatic light-scape. Silent\, repetitive movements reflect the tension between opposites\, embodying an exploration of the roles of captor and captive. \nAn atmospheric sound piece created by Bauer accompanies the performance. It adapts chords from Danzig’s “Mother” and layers them with field recordings from the ASU Art Museum grounds and the artist’s studio neighborhood in San Francisco. \n“Spinnte-Spänne” is a meditation on themes of being\, becoming and experiencing motherhood. Developed for the closing reception of “Notes on Motherhood\,” the piece symbolically engages with the ASU Art Museum’s architecture\, which embodies dualities of interior and exterior\, passage and destination\, and descent and ascent.
