SUMMARY:Twin Flames: The George Floyd Uprising from Minneapolis to Phoenix
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with ASU’s Center for Work and Democracy and the George Floyd Global Memorial\, ASU Art Museum presents “Twin Flames: The George Floyd Uprising from Minneapolis to Phoenix.” Presented for the first time outside of Minnesota and on view from February 3 through July 28\, 2024 at the ASU Art Museum\, “Twin Flames” asks important questions about the role of art and community as a vehicle for bearing witness and creating deeper understanding and empathy. It also examines the state of public memorials in this country\, and prompts us to reflect on whose stories are shared\, by whom and why.  \nIn contrast to traditional monuments\, “Twin Flames” is a powerful\, community-led exhibition that showcases a selection of the thousands of offerings laid by mourners and protesters at George Floyd Square\, collected by a group of community caretakers and cataloged by the George Floyd Global Memorial team. DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Rashad Shabazz\, Associate Professor in the Schools of Social Transformation and Geographical Sciences & Urban Planning\, and Jeanelle Austin\, Executive Director of the George Floyd Global Memorial for a discussion around the history and politics of Minneapolis and Prince and how they weave together to create meaning in the present day. \nThis event is held by the Center for Work and Democracy. \n“Biography of a Sound” is about the music Prince made famous—the Minneapolis Sound. This book is a musical geography that tells the story of how Indian removal\, white settlement\, mass migration\, industrialization\, music education\, racism\, and a genius kid born and raised in the city’s small Black community gave rise to a form of transgressive popular music that put the “vanilla city” of Minneapolis on the map. For over four decades\, Prince dazzled us with his unique combination of rock\, funk\, R&B\, jazz\, and new wave. His musical range was unparalleled; his talent was otherworldly\, and his drive was legendary. He was a one-man band who wrote\, arranged\, composed\, and performed most of the music on his 44 studio albums\, influenced generations of musicians\, and mentored musicians like Janelle Monae\, Lizzo\, and Alicia Keys. He single-handedly changed the face of popular music and became one of the greatest and most prolific artists we’ve ever seen. SUMMARY:Tonia Calderon: Endless
DESCRIPTION:Art in Focus is dedicated to intimate\, project-based presentations by invited artists or drawn from the museum’s collection that encourage sustained engagement and deep attention. “Tonia Calderon: Endless” extends this commitment by positioning the gallery as a site of learning\, reflection and experimentation. \nFor this project\, Los Angeles–based artist Tonia Calderon brings elements of her studio into the museum\, including a large-scale panel painting\, a newly created suite of works on paper and her personal library. Layered surfaces\, dense textures and shifts in scale characterize the work\, moving between the microscopic and the expansive. Calderon combines natural and synthetic materials\, often incorporating flowers as both subject and pigment to reference cycles of growth\, decay and renewal. \nAt the center of the installation\, Calderon’s library underscores reading as an active and generative part of her practice. Language\, memory and material remain in motion throughout “Endless\,” which resists resolution and embraces repetition\, return and transformation. The exhibition invites visitors to linger within this rhythm and to consider art as a lifelong practice of becoming. \n“Tonia Calderon: Endless” is organized by ASU Art Museum Senior Curator Alana Hernandez and ASU Art Museum Latinx Curatorial Fellow Natalie Solis. \n\nThis exhibition and its related programming and events are made possible by our supporters of the Visionary Artist Series and our preferred hospitality partner\, the Omni Tempe Hotel at ASU.

DESCRIPTION:“Cross Check: William Wegman and Jacob Trouba\,” brings together the distinct practices of artist William Wegman and professional hockey player turned artist Jacob Trouba. “Cross Check: William Wegman and Jacob Trouba” explores movement as a form of artistic production\, translation\, and collaboration. Rooted in the shared language of hockey\, the exhibition examines the body as both subject and medium through a series of collaborative works presented publicly for the first time. Drawing on his experience as an athlete\, Trouba covers himself in ink while wearing hockey gear and propels himself across the canvas\, leaving behind marks that record speed\, force\, and impact. Wegman responds by translating those gestures into paintings that reinterpret the movement at an intimate scale\, creating an ongoing dialogue between action and reflection. Borrowing its title from the hockey maneuver in which a player forcefully checks an opponent with both hands on the stick\, Cross Check reveals how physicality\, play\, and creative exchange transform movement\, whether on the ice or in the studio\, into a powerful form of artistic expression. \n\n“Cross Check: William Wegman and Jacob Trouba” is organized by Senior Curator Alana Hernandez and Windgate Curatorial Fellow Sade Moore and made possible by generous funding from NHL Unites.
