SUMMARY:Tonia Calderon: Endless
DESCRIPTION:Art in Focus is dedicated to intimate\, project-based presentations by invited artists or drawn from the museum’s collection that encourage sustained engagement and deep attention. “Tonia Calderon: Endless” extends this commitment by positioning the gallery as a site of learning\, reflection and experimentation. \nFor this project\, Los Angeles–based artist Tonia Calderon brings elements of her studio into the museum\, including a large-scale panel painting\, a newly created suite of works on paper and her personal library. Layered surfaces\, dense textures and shifts in scale characterize the work\, moving between the microscopic and the expansive. Calderon combines natural and synthetic materials\, often incorporating flowers as both subject and pigment to reference cycles of growth\, decay and renewal. \nAt the center of the installation\, Calderon’s library underscores reading as an active and generative part of her practice. Language\, memory and material remain in motion throughout “Endless\,” which resists resolution and embraces repetition\, return and transformation. The exhibition invites visitors to linger within this rhythm and to consider art as a lifelong practice of becoming. \n“Tonia Calderon: Endless” is organized by ASU Art Museum Senior Curator Alana Hernandez and ASU Art Museum Latinx Curatorial Fellow Natalie Solis. \n\nThis exhibition and its related programming and events are made possible by our supporters of the Visionary Artist Series and our preferred hospitality partner\, the Omni Tempe Hotel at ASU.

SUMMARY:"Cross Check: William Wegman and Jacob Trouba"
DESCRIPTION:“Cross Check: William Wegman and Jacob Trouba\,” brings together the distinct practices of artist William Wegman and professional hockey player turned artist Jacob Trouba. “Cross Check: William Wegman and Jacob Trouba” explores movement as a form of artistic production\, translation\, and collaboration. Rooted in the shared language of hockey\, the exhibition examines the body as both subject and medium through a series of collaborative works presented publicly for the first time. Drawing on his experience as an athlete\, Trouba covers himself in ink while wearing hockey gear and propels himself across the canvas\, leaving behind marks that record speed\, force\, and impact. Wegman responds by translating those gestures into paintings that reinterpret the movement at an intimate scale\, creating an ongoing dialogue between action and reflection. Borrowing its title from the hockey maneuver in which a player forcefully checks an opponent with both hands on the stick\, Cross Check reveals how physicality\, play\, and creative exchange transform movement\, whether on the ice or in the studio\, into a powerful form of artistic expression. \n\n“Cross Check: William Wegman and Jacob Trouba” is organized by Senior Curator Alana Hernandez and Windgate Curatorial Fellow Sade Moore and made possible by generous funding from NHL Unites.
